It is pretty much a given that Hong Kong is the heartbeat of trends and fashions in Asia, and it is now apparent that the most elegant and striking models on the runways come from the Far East. All of the most prestigious designers in the world are vying for attention in the fashion industry, and they all show up in Hong Kong. It is also true that a large percentage of the buyers at international fashion shows hail from China, South Korea and Japan, so the blend of Asian, European and American designs puts Hong Kong right in the vying and buying spotlight.
Just a snippet of the fashion trends will give you an idea of who and what to look for in the coming months. For example, note how those flattering but excruciating stilettos are being at least partially supplanted by ballerina flats. Several top designers including Repetto, Tod’s, Chanel and Cole Haan are showing kindness to models’ (and shoppers’!) ankles and feet with beautiful but comfortable footwear that spans all ages and cultures.
One of the many notable looks for women is the Lane Crawford line of serious power, an exaggerated high impact series definitely designed for women who expect to be taken seriously. Others including Alexander McQueen and Alexander Wong are getting into the look with leathers, studs, metal mesh, and ankle boots that make a dramatic statement.
On the other side of the freedom of expression field is the glamorous and ultra-feminine
look favoured by Lanvin and Alberta Ferretti and by the confident and unmistakable resurgence of Halston. The one-shoulder draped gown has its roots in the ancient Roman toga, and Halston brought it to life in the ‘70′s. Now it’s back, more alluring than ever.
Since almost every designer is picking up on the trend towards the outdoors and sporting activities, you will see a fantastic array of new approaches to perennial favourites. The new Puma Black store in Hong Kong is a microcosm of high fashion for every occasion, and the ambiance is designed to put you in the mood for outdoor dress-up.
This month was the 16th Hong Kong Fashion Week show, and it was described quite accurately as “a show the likes of which you have never seen before”. You can call them Artists of the Runway, (or not) but the world’s foremost fashion designers have created some fantastic futuristic designs that will be incorporated into many of the most sought-after garments the whole world will be buying in the next few months.
