Hong Kong Trained Designer Impacts the Western World of Fashion – Vivienne Tam
Vivienne Tam is a New York based designer who was born in Guangzhou China and moved to Hong Kong when she was three and she attended the Hong Kong Polytchnic University. Her designs are a mixture of modern western fashion and Chinese design. As a designer Vivienne draws on her Chinese heritage for inspiration.
Vivienne Tams Fall collection has a broad colour palate but draws mainly on the colours of red, purple, green and black which are used as single bold colours and occasionally appear as prints. Overall the collection is extremly feminine and designed to compliment the lines of the female body.
The general design aesthetic is quite western, the lines of the dresses and the high waisted pencil skits are something that is seen a lot in western fashion. Where Tam makes her collection distinctive is in the fabrics that she uses, the stand out factor is the beautiful silks that are used. For those of you what are not aware Chinese silk has been know for its quality ever since it was brought to the western world.
Black tights were a standard feature of every outfit that hit the run way, and added a nice cohesive flow to the fashion show.

Some Vivienne Tam dresses that you may recognise include this black number worn by Hayden Panettiere. Hayden has a particular fondness for the designer and if you have a look around the web you will find a few pictures of Hayden in different Tam frocks.

And below you can see Ashley Tisdale in a Vivienne Tam dress at the Munich launch of High School Musical 3 which is the movie series that brought fame to the young actress. Other A list celebrities who have been spotted in Tam creations include Barbie, Mickey Mouse, Julia Roberts and Paris Hilton. I think it is fair to say that this is one designer from the east who has certainly made her mark on the west.
