Shopping For Fabric in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is well known for being a haven for silk and other products. Both China and Hong Kong have always been the home of many high quality garment companies. Many of these companies don’t sell all their available fabric to locals or export them overseas, and this leaves them with a surplus. These leftover fabrics will often end up in shops all over Hong Kong.

The city of Hong Kong is basically divided into two types of fabric. There is the high quality silk fabric which are seen as being standard Oriental fabrics, and there is the fabric which has come to be known as street fabric. The high quality fabric is available in most department stores and traditional shops. The fabric is sold based on yards and meters, and you can expect to deal with friendly sales staff. All of the information about the fabric will be added, and you can pay with either cash or credit cards.

Street fabric, as the name implies, is sold by street vendors in Hong Kong. Many fabric enthusiasts enjoy purchasing fabric from street vendors. There are no prices, and no measurements are given. It is up to you to take measurements prior to making a purchase. Many street vendors will specialize in a specific type of fabric like wool, and where they got the fabric from is generally not known. Some may get the fabric from companies who have leftovers available. You will have to negotiate with street vendors when attempting to make a purchase.

You will want to kindly ask the vendor how much a specific type of fabric costs. Once they give you an answer, you will want to negotiate a lower price. If the price you ask for is too low, you can sound insulting, so you want to make sure you go about 2/3 of the price asked for by the vendor. Because the street vendors have an overhead which is much lower than their department store counterparts, you can expect much cheaper prices. Most take cash, but a few have started taking credit cards as well. Many visitors agree that street vendors are the best place to buy fabric in Hong Kong. They need to get rid of fabric, and customers will be looking for a great deal.Hong Kong also has a garment district which is full of fabric shops. Some products are sold in wholesale, while others are sold in large quantities. It is a good place to go if you’re looking for small amounts of fabric or very large quantities.

I would prefer buying the fabric from the shops rather than from the streetside vendor. I don’t know but I never feel comfortable buying from a streetside vendor. Even though I know that I can get stuff for cheap there but somewhere inside I feel that shopping at proper shops is much better way to shop. Btw how much variations we can expect in the prices for stuff available on shops and on street.
