Taiwan is an Asian country that is passionate about its heritage and culture - and is also extremely interested in fashion. You would think however, that with its strong sense of tradition and heritage, that much of the country's fashion sense would represent Taiwan of old with a modern twist, however it is widely known that Taiwanese fashion is heavily influenced by western styles and designers.

In many instances, western ideas about fashion have completely taken over the country and in some cases, many of the biggest named department stores in Taiwan feature the most famous western designers including; Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Armani and Dior. Louis Vuitton proves to be the most in demand however.Even though Western influences are plentiful in Taiwan, there are still many Asian inspired ideas too, with Taiwanese people enjoying what local designers and many Japanese designers have to showcase. 

There is no doubting that European designers are the most commonly seen pieces in Taiwan but there are also many people who like to stay true to their roots and wear clothes designed and manufactured by Taiwanese people. Many clothes and garments can be found at Taiwanese night markets and you will also find these pieces at a reduced rate.Although there aren't too many internationally acclaimed Taiwanese designers, this is not to say that they aren't many talented and artistic people in the country. It is the complete opposite in fact, as there are now more and more budding designers that are progressing through the ranks at university and looking to make a name for themselves. 

Fashion really is a big thing in Taiwan.One of the country's most famous exports when it comes to designers however, is Jason Wu. He is now a popular and highly regarded figure on the world fashion scene and in terms of demand, could easily be seen as one of the world's most favoured designers. His rise to fame has also been helped by big-name celebrities admiring and wearing his designs. For instance, U.S first lady Michelle Obama wore one of his designs to her husband's inauguration ball. Wu also won Fashion Group International's Rising Star Award in 2008.Even though much of Taiwanese fashion is heavily influenced by western ideas, this does not mean that the people of Taiwan dress exactly like western people. They use their imagination to incorporate and try out various garments and pair up clothes differently to put their own spin on things. They are extremely creative people. 

Like many other fashion-conscious countries, Taiwan also has a fashion centre. Taipei is without doubt Taiwan's most concentrated fashion hub and welcomes visitors from all over the country looking to sample the latest designs and trends.
